Bunker Volunteering opportunities

Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker is a fun, unusual and engaging place to work and participate. A previously top secret nuclear bunker hidden deep in the Cheshire countryside, we are home to a large Cold War emergency planning collection, nuclear weapons and a resident bunker cat. We’re looking to expand our volunteering opportunities to offer a place for more people and bring new perspectives to our museum.  You’ll be a part of a small friendly team that values you as person not just your CV. We’re passionate about helping people to develop their skills while having a great time being part of such a valuable and unconventional heritage site.

What we hope you’ll get out of volunteering at Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker: Apart from the ultimate bragging rights of working at a secret bunker, we want to help you:

  • hone your skills,

  • work in a friendly, enjoyable environment,

  • get free entry to special events including things such our film club nights,

  • be part of a team that preserves, protects and presents a valuable national heritage.

Who we’re looking for…

  • Social Media Volunteers

We’ve always had a fun attitude to our social media, we’re looking for someone who enjoys developing new content and down’t mind keeping up with a few enquiries. We’re open to new ideas too! Fancy being a social media star or more of a behind the scenes person, we welcome all kinds of approaches. It would be helpful if you can make it to bunker events, such as our living history weekend. Travel costs would be reimbursed (with a limit), but it isn’t a deal breaker. The role can be completely remote, we’re happy to work with you to find a good balance.

Time Commitment: We’re hoping you can spend around one day a week, but we’re flexible so if you’re more of a night owl or want to split that through lots of smaller blocks that’s fine. The position lasts for 3 months, but we can extend that if we both agree it’s a good idea.

  • Volunteer Admin Assistant

Have you got a knack for paperwork? Love it when a spreadsheet comes together? We’re looking for someone to help us with all the little admin tasks that come from running a museum. From putting together GiftAid entries to replying to correspondence. You don’t need any experience, just enthusiasm. It’s not the most exciting job but it’s a really vital part of keeping the bunker running smoothly. It’s a great opportunity for someone looking to do some important with their spare time or to develop their skills.

Time Commitment: We need you to spend about one day a week, we’ve got a hot desk here, are happy to support flexible working from home or a combination of the both. The position lasts for 3 months, but we can extend that if we both agree it’s a good idea.

  • Volunteer Bunker Blogger

We know that blogs are a bit 2000s but we’ve still got plenty to say. Fancy brushing up your writing skills? We’re looking for someone to run our Bunker Blog and also one for our Secret Bunker Weddings. There’s always something interesting going on at the bunker. We’d love you to write about it. You’ll get lots of creative control, we’re up for hearing your voice not just a corporate one.

Time Commitment: We’re looking for one post a month for each blog, how you divide the time is up to you. The position lasts for 3 months, but we can extend that if we both agree it’s a good idea. It might be helpful if you can make it to bunker events, such as our living history weekend. Travel costs would be reimbursed (with a limit), but it isn’t a deal breaker. The role can be completely remote, we’re happy to work with you to find a good balance.

  • Young Curators Project Leader (Volunteer)

We’re passionate about hearing young people’s voices and their thoughts about the bunker. We’re starting a new project to put together a team of Young Curators to develop their own tours for the public. It’s going to be a fun project and will offer an opportunity for young people to develop their skills as well as having fun in the bunker. If you love working with young people and enjoy the challenge of leading a small team then this is for you. Working closely with our Museum Director you’ll get a real chance to develop and carry out the project from start to finish, putting your own stamp on it.

Time Commitment: The project will run from January to June 2022, so it’s a 6 month commitment. We think it will need at least one day a week, but with a less regular working pattern. So some weeks it’ll be half an hour checking emails, other weeks it might be two full days training and working with Young Curators. We can be relatively flexible with days and are happy to work with you in terms of flexible working arrangements.

  • Maintenance Team Volunteers

Handy with a hammer? Absolute whizz with a paintbrush? We’re looking for odd job maintenance people to help us with the never-ending list of little maintenance jobs that rack up in a museum. It’s nothing more complicated than the kind of DIY you’d do at home, unless you’re a registered trades person willing to give a couple of hours here and there to help keep the important heritage site at Hack Green running. We love having visitors but unfortunately they mean lots of wear and tear and with something as unique and important as the bunker we want to keep it in a good state of repair.

Time Commitment: It’s very ad hoc and we can work around you. Ideally about one full day a month would be really helpful to help us break down the maintenance task list. Anyone with specialist skills, any time that you can donate is very welcome even if it’s just the odd hour here and there.

  • Collections Volunteers

Would you love to get your hands on some of the rarest and coolest Cold War items in the country? We’re looking for a small team to help us catalogue our collection. There’s loads of amazing stuff in the museum from nuclear weapons to geiger counters and we could do with knowing where it all is and what it is. It’s a big, ongoing project but is a vital step in protecting the collection. It would be a useful placement for someone hoping to work in museums in the future, collections management is the base of what most museum’s do. No specific skills necessary, just a bit of basic computer literacy and a love of old things.

Time Commitment: It’s very ad hoc and we can work around you but we’re thinking about one to two days a month. There’s thousands of items to catalogue so your help would be amazing.
